A Critical Evaluation
RFID is the latest technology used in libraries for managing the automated library and also for theft detection .The State Central Library, Thiruvananthapuram is the first public library implemented RFID technology in India. This study is an attempt to analyze different components of RFID system implemented and to evaluate the level of awareness and satisfaction of users in the RFID enabled services of the State Central Library. The major objective of the study are: (i) to identify the components of the RFID system and their standards implemented in the State Central Library (SCL); (ii) to study the user awareness and familiarity of the components of RF ID system installed in SCL; (iii) to recognize the relevance and quality of services through RFID enabled system; (iv) to seek the opinion of users about orientation and functioning of RFID system; (v) to find out the satisfaction level of users in RFID enabled service; (vi) to realize the problems in the RFID enabled system and services; and (viii) to make suggestions for the improvement of RFID system in SCL. It was found that majority of the respondents are aware and familiar with various RFID components installed in the library. In their view, self-service KIOSK is the most attractive component of RFID system and the RFID implementation in the library enhanced the quality of services offered. Majority of the respondents do not get much information about RFID system especially from the library staff. Majority of the users are satisfied with Book Drop Box, Self Service KIOSK and Gate Antenna. The major problems faced by the users are lack of support from the staff, lack of familiarity with the system and privacy issues. It was suggested that regular user orientation programmes should be given to the users for the optimum utilization of the RFID system.
